If there is one thing about me that has remained wildly consistent throughout my life, it is my love for fashion. From being a little girl obsessing over glamorous outfits on television to now spending an arguably concerning amount of time thinking about handbags, tailoring, and aesthetic interiors, the obsession has only intensified with age.
And naturally, one of my favourite ways to indulge that obsession is through film. There is something about fashion movies specifically that feels deeply comforting to me. The drama, the styling, the chaos, the impossibly beautiful wardrobes that make you reconsider every item currently hanging in your own closet. So today, I thought I would share some of the fashion-focused films I return to time and time again when I want a little glamour, escapism, and cinematic fabulousness.
Clueless
This was one of my favourite films growing up, despite the fact I was only one year old when it was originally released. My older sister used to watch it constantly, which meant I very quickly became obsessed with Cher Horowitz, plaid co-ords, and the concept of having a digital wardrobe organiser before most people even had proper internet access.
Even now, I still think the fashion in Clueless holds up incredibly well. Cher’s wardrobe remains iconic, and honestly, I am still waiting for the day technology catches up enough for me to casually rotate outfits through a touchscreen wardrobe like hers. We are in the future now. Surely this should already exist.
The Devil Wears Prada
I genuinely believe this film altered the brain chemistry of an entire generation of women.
While some people watched it and thought Miranda Priestly looked terrifying to work for, I somehow had the complete opposite reaction. It made me desperately want to work in fashion publishing. I wanted the impossible standards, the frantic office environment, the sample closets, and the dramatic coat removals. Which honestly says quite a lot about me psychologically.
To this day, it remains one of my ultimate comfort films. The fashion is incredible, the casting is perfection, and every single time I watch it, I somehow convince myself I too could survive on an iced coffee and pure stress.
Ocean’s 8
The moment this film was announced, I lost my mind entirely. It took everything people loved about the original Ocean’s films and added couture, diamonds, and a cast of impossibly glamorous women.
The fact that the story revolves around the Met Gala only makes it even better. The styling throughout the film is incredible, but honestly, Rihanna alone could have sat silently in every scene and I still would have considered it a cinematic masterpiece. It is stylish, chaotic, fun, and one of the few films I can rewatch endlessly without getting bored.
Pretty Woman
I think what makes Pretty Woman so iconic is not just the fashion itself, but the confidence and energy behind it. Julia Roberts plays Vivian in such a magnetic way that every outfit becomes instantly memorable.
The transformation scenes are obviously legendary, but even before that, there is something incredibly powerful about the way her character carries herself. The famous shopping scene remains one of the most satisfying moments in film history, and honestly, who amongst us has not secretly fantasised about dramatically returning to a shop that underestimated us?
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
This is probably the most classic film on this list, but there was absolutely no way I could leave it out. Audrey Hepburn standing outside Tiffany & Co. in that iconic black Givenchy dress is one of the most recognisable fashion moments in cinema history.
There is something timeless about the entire film. The styling, the elegance, the glamour of old Hollywood. Even decades later, it still feels effortlessly chic in a way very few films manage to achieve.
Sex and the City
Of course I could not possibly write this post without mentioning Sex and the City. Realistically, this entire blog probably owes Carrie Bradshaw royalties at this point.
The fashion throughout both the series and films is completely outrageous in the best possible way. While many of the outfits are not necessarily wearable in normal day-to-day life, that is almost what makes them so brilliant. They are expressive, fearless, and entirely unapologetic. Plus, the wardrobe in these films gave us some of the most iconic designer moments in pop culture history.
Final Thoughts
Fashion films are not just about clothes. They are about fantasy, identity, confidence, escapism, and the version of ourselves we imagine when we slip into something that makes us feel incredible.
These films have become comfort watches for me over the years, not just because they are visually beautiful, but because they remind me why I fell in love with fashion in the first place. The drama, the styling, the creativity, the sheer excess of it all. Honestly, sometimes watching beautiful people make questionable decisions in couture is exactly the kind of therapy I need.
As always, I would love to hear from you. What are your ultimate fashion films, and which iconic movie wardrobe would you steal immediately if given the chance?
