If there is one thing I have been consistently honest about on this site, it is the fact that I am, at my core, a homebody. It genuinely takes something quite significant to pull me away from my house, and even then, I am usually thinking about when I can return. Over the years, I have spoken often about how proud I am of the home we have created, and naturally, when I am not at work, I want to make the most of it.
Even on the simplest of days, I try to romanticise my time at home. To turn what could be an ordinary day into something that feels intentional and restorative. And because of that, I have built up a small collection of essentials that help transform a quiet day in into something that feels, quite frankly, perfect.
Apple TV
I have a somewhat irrational aversion to live television. There is something about endlessly scrolling, trying to find something worth watching, that feels unnecessarily draining. It is a task that somehow manages to suck the enjoyment out of the experience before it has even begun.
That is where my Apple TV comes in. It holds everything I love in one place. Films I have collected over the years, comfort shows I return to repeatedly, and all the streaming platforms I could possibly need, from Netflix to Disney+. It removes the friction and leaves only the part I actually enjoy, which is exactly what a cosy day requires.
Curtains Closed
There is a certain kind of peace that comes from shutting the world out, even if just for a little while. It may sound dramatic, but on a proper day of rest, I want to create a space that feels entirely separate from everything happening outside.
We have a snug room in our home that is perfect for this. The curtains are drawn, the light softens, and suddenly the day feels slower. It is the kind of environment where you can truly switch off, lose track of time, and settle into a level of comfort that feels almost indulgent.
Heated Blanket
Yes, I am fully aware that I am sharing this in what is technically considered summer, but my love for a heated blanket does not follow seasonal rules. I am, and always have been, someone who feels the cold, regardless of the time of year.
Even on a slightly cooler evening, my heated blanket makes an appearance. There is something about that immediate warmth that feels incredibly comforting, wrapping you up in a way that a regular throw simply cannot compete with. It is, without question, one of my non-negotiables.
Comfort TV Shows
Everyone has those shows. The ones you can watch endlessly without ever tiring of them. The ones that feel safe, predictable, and familiar in the best possible way.
For me, that includes The Vampire Diaries, The Office, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Taskmaster. On a cosy day, I am not looking for anything new or challenging. I want something that feels like a comfort blanket in its own right, something that I know will leave me feeling relaxed and content.
Sugary Food and Drink
For the most part, I try to be mindful of what I eat, particularly when it comes to sugar, as I manage my PCOS. But every so often, I allow myself a day where those rules soften slightly.
We have a designated cupboard in our kitchen that houses all of the treats, safely tucked away most of the time. On a proper cosy day, however, that cupboard does not stand a chance. It is raided with enthusiasm, and for a moment, balance takes a back seat to pure enjoyment. And honestly, I think that is important every now and then.
Cuddles with My Dog
There is nothing quite like the comfort of a dog who has no intention of being anywhere else but right next to you. My dog, a Golden Retriever, has mastered the art of the perfect cuddle.
Do not get me wrong, cuddles with my child are lovely, but they tend to be fleeting. My dog, however, is more than happy to settle in for the long haul. It is a level of calm, consistent comfort that feels essential on a day dedicated to rest.
Candles Lit
I have a habit of buying beautiful candles and then hesitating to actually use them. There is something about lighting them that feels slightly indulgent, as though I am quite literally burning money.
But on a day like this, that logic goes out the window. Candles are lit, often in abundance, filling the room with warmth and fragrance. It may be slightly excessive, and yes, occasionally it pushes my asthma to its limits, but for the atmosphere alone, it is entirely worth it.
A Good Book
For me, the perfect cosy day is incomplete without a good book. And by good book, I mean something easy to fall into, something light, romantic, and ultimately comforting.
I will happily lose hours to a story that I know is going to end well, the kind that leaves you smiling at your Kindle without even realising it. It is escapism at its simplest, and on a day dedicated to rest, it is exactly what I need.
Final Thoughts
At the heart of it, I do not need much to enjoy a day at home. A sofa and a good book would be enough. But it is these small additions, these little rituals, that elevate the experience and turn it into something more intentional.
Taking the time to create a space that feels calm, comforting, and entirely your own is something I have come to value deeply. And if that means staying in, shutting the world out for a while, and fully leaning into it, then I am more than happy to do exactly that.
As always, I would love to hear from you. What are your go-to essentials for the perfect cosy day at home?
