The Questions That I Get Asked The Most

Whether you are here as a reader, fellow writer, agent or simply someone curious about what happens behind the scenes, this page should hopefully answer a few of the questions I am asked most often.

From my writing process and current projects to publication plans and the slightly chaotic reality of trying to build a career as an author, I have covered the things people usually want to know. I am still very much figuring parts of this journey out as I go, so some answers may evolve alongside me. Consider this the quickest way to get to know the stories, the process and the woman behind the words a little better.

About the journey

Being an author was never something that I personally aspired for. I have loved reading for many years and it wasn’t until I put pen to paper many years ago in order to try and occupy my mental health worries that I realised that writing fed something within me. I feel like it was a very natural evolution.

I started out as an avid reader who would dream up my own stories at night to stop my panicked OCD thoughts running away with themselves as soon as my head hit the pillow. After a few moinths of this routine, I decided to jot the thoughts down so that I could build things out and before I knew it, there was a book looking back at me.

For me, the hardest part was deciding that this wasn’t just a hobby and something that would hide away in the depth of my Google Drive. Taking the leap that this is a serious avenue for me to persue and that I had to keep going in a strategic way if I ever wanted to make something of those files that I once vowed nobody else would read.

Decide to what degree you want to launch your career within the literary space. Make a clear plan with tangiable actions and stick to it. Keep going. Chip away at it very slowly if that is the only way to make progress. But keep going.

It’s hard. Very hard at times. Over the years I have tried to put into perspective what success would look like to me, rather than thinking of myself and my literary works in comparison to some of the most famous authors witin the literary industry. Always think, what is success to me and how can I get there?

About the writing

To begin with, many of my ideas come from my real-life experiences. Even though at the time I may have found the trials and tribulations that I went through incredibly difficult, every single one of them has made me a better person, and thankfully they have given me some fuel for my creative venture. Plus, I have a very overactive imagination, so I can take those stories that I lived, embellish them and build a true story.

When it comes to my characters, I try to keep things simple. What do I want to read? How do I want to see characters described? What are the things that stand out to me when that initial character description is introduced? From there, I can make a checklist of what I want to try to communicate to the reader.

It really depends on my motivation levels, what else I have going on in my life and how much time I can realistically dedicate to getting through the chapters. Based on some of my completed manuscripts, though, I can say that with good planning I would be able to put together a rough draft within approximately 5 months from introduction to epilogue.

In the early days when this was just a hobby, I would always write as I go. As a random idea popped into my head I would grab my laptop and build on my story. However, in an attempt to take this hobby to the next level, I try to plan as much as possible so that I can use my pretty limited time effectively.

If I am starting on a new manuscript, an idea will already be kicking around in my head. I will then take that initial thought, open up the planning document that I designed and begin to build the idea out into a clear plan for the entire flow of the book.

About the books

Romance primarily. However, some initial feedback has told me that there is an additional layer to them than your tried-and-true romance novel. Some of them truly have elements to them which could be considered ever so slightly thriller-esque. But what I strive for is good storytelling with that romance connection that so many of us adore.

Each book will be part of a three-part series, and then those series are all connected as a part of the same universe.

The characters across the universe of novels are connected. Some by strong connections and others by invisible strings that pull them together and hopefully it will lead to exciting moments for the audience when they see some of their favourite characters appearing or being mentioned.

My aim is that by the beginning of next year, by hook or by crook, my debut novel will be available to download.

Still curious?

I have tried to answer the questions I am asked most often, but writing, publishing and building an entirely fictional universe rarely fit neatly into fifteen answers. This journey is still unfolding, which means there will always be new updates, fresh lessons and probably a few unexpected plot twists along the way. You can explore more about the books I am creating, follow my progress towards publication or head to the journal for a more honest look at the writing process, including the productive days, the self-doubt and the chapters that seem determined to fight back.

As the novels move closer to finding their way into readers’ hands, I will continue updating this page with everything you might want to know, from release news and reading order to the stories behind the stories. Until then, thank you for being curious, supporting the journey and giving me another perfectly valid reason to keep talking about the characters who already occupy far too much space in my head. I hope you stay for the updates, the inevitable chaos and, eventually, the moment these stories finally make their way from my laptop to your bookshelf.
