Currently Avoiding My Manuscript by Reading Other Peoples

There are two types of people in this world. Those who tackle their to-do list head on, and those of us who suddenly develop an urgent need to read four hundred pages the moment our own creative work requires attention. I, unsurprisingly, fall into the second category.

My manuscript is sitting patiently, waiting for edits, decisions and a level of emotional maturity I have not yet located. Instead, I have been deeply committed to supporting other authors by reading their work with great enthusiasm and absolutely no guilt. So if you too have ever ignored your own ambitions in favour of getting emotionally invested in fictional people, welcome. You are among friends.

Fourth Wing Series Review: The BookTok Obsession That Got Me

Let me start by saying I resisted Fourth Wing for far too long. Not because I thought I was above it, but because I knew exactly what would happen once I started. I would become insufferably invested, lose sleep and start speaking about dragons as if they were a normal part of everyday life. Sadly, I was right.

The entire series is wildly addictive. It has romance, tension, danger and the kind of pacing that makes you say “just one more chapter” until it is somehow midnight. What surprised me most is that it is far deeper than the lighter romances I usually reach for. Alongside the A Court of Thorns and Roses series, it has opened me up to the romantasy world so many readers love, and I can already tell I am only getting started.

In Her Own League Review: The Romance You Accidentally Finish in One Sitting

There is something deeply satisfying about a book that knows exactly what it is and delivers from start to finish. In Her Own League has that energy. It is warm, engaging and the sort of romance that makes everyday life feel a little shinier while you are reading it.

What I especially loved was having a strong businesswoman as the lead. There was ambition, drive and substance, which always makes a character feel far more interesting to me. I also appreciated that the female lead was not written as impossibly tiny and delicate. Hearing her described with thick thighs did more for a few lingering confidence issues than some motivational speeches ever could, regardless of what dress size I may or may not reach.

Let Them Theory Review: The Advice Book Everyone Needs Right Now

Self-development books can be hit or miss. Sometimes they offer life-changing perspective. Other times they simply tell you to wake up at 5am and drink more water, which feels insulting when you are already tired. The Let Them Theory thankfully falls into the first category.

The concept is refreshingly simple and, annoyingly, very effective. Let people do what they are going to do, and stop exhausting yourself trying to control every outcome. For someone trying to move on from lifelong people-pleasing tendencies that have often kept me stuck and slowed my progress, it felt particularly relevant. Practical, grounding and the kind of book you mentally quote to yourself when someone is being deeply irritating.

Binding 13 Review: Emotional Damage in Paperback Form

I resisted Binding 13 for a long time. Sometimes when a book becomes that popular, it oddly pushes me away. There is also the issue of spoilers, because once a book takes over the internet, every scroll feels like a risk to your emotional wellbeing.

I finally gave in, and I could not be happier that I did. I read every single word with full emotional commitment. It has depth, heart and the kind of emotional pull that sneaks up on you when you thought you were simply here for a love story. Tender, painful, hopeful and beautifully written, which is really just another way of saying I suffered and loved every minute.

What Reading These Books Has Taught Me About Avoiding My Own Work

There is always something to learn when you read widely, even if you are pretending it is procrastination. Good books remind you what works, what moves people and why storytelling matters in the first place. They also make you wildly jealous that someone else has already finished theirs.

Each of these books offered something different, whether that was escapism, perspective, romance or emotional devastation. And while I would love to say they have inspired me to immediately return to my manuscript with renewed discipline, I have instead added three more titles to my reading list. Growth is rarely linear.

Final Thoughts

If your own project is currently staring at you from across the room while you do literally anything else, I understand. Sometimes reading other people’s finished work feels easier than facing your own unfinished thoughts. There is no shame in that, only a slight delay.

That said, these books were all worth the distraction. If you are looking for your next read, whether you want dragons, romance, life advice or emotional chaos, you could do far worse than starting here. As for my manuscript, we will speak soon. Probably.
